Hats off to Scots businesswoman in fashion modeling world who launched own web firm after failing to find hat for Ascot

WHEN mum-of-two Rebecca Anderson couldn't find a hat to wear to Ascot, she made her own. Then she started an internet-based millinery company and now her creations grace magazines around the fashion modeling world.

She said: "We chose the outfits first, then I made the fascinators around that."But now that I know more about millinery, I make the fascinators first then choose the outfits around them. It's all about the hats."After receiving advice from a friend who dabbled in millinery, she learned the basics before creating her own look.

She said: "Two weeks before Ascot, I thought I'd better get on with things and decided to go with a butterfly-theme fascinator for myself with ostrich feathers and Swarovski crystals. It was my first attempt but, even now, people still ask me to create versions of it. My sister-in-law went for a coral and lime fascinator with feathers and quills and sinamay mesh."

The response to Rebecca's creations was encouraging but it was with some trepidation that she went to Ascot.

She revealed: "We were apprehensive because we'd never been before and didn't know what to expect."But the girls' nerves soon disappeared and before long they were getting admiring glances and comments.Rebecca said: "I got quite a lot of orders from brides mothers and weddings from that first outing."Some people at Ascot had hats showing off bathroom suites or cigarette ashtrays. A lot of them lost the elegance of it in a desperate bid to get attention.

"Although they were very well themed, and topical and gimmicky, I made the decision to keep my creations elegant and chic, to a high standard as a editorial model."I realised as well that creations for Ascot need to be slightly larger than life."Rebecca's next year at the event was a resounding success and she was surrounded by photographers.

She said: "I got the size right and made sure my feathered fascinators were very brightly coloured and stylised."All the BBC news cameras, photographers and radio people surrounded us and we were even on GMTV, and Marie Claire afterwards."

Since then, Rebecca's styles have beaten Philip Treacy designs at Musselburgh race course's Ladies Day, after winning the top prize for innovation and creativity. Now, as well as contributing to a fashion show at Glasgow's Arta on November 7, Rebecca is hosting her own fashion show as a new Scottish designer at this year's Glasgow Fashion Week on November 20 in The Winchester Club.

Rebecca plans to become the No.1 bespoke milliner in Scotland.

She said: "I would love to have my own shop in Edinburgh or Glasgow. I want to be the person people think of when they want a hat or fascinator made in Scotland.

"We try to push boundaries with colours and material and build a rapport with clients to open their minds to new ideas.

"There are traditional milliners here, but I'm trying to bring a fresh element and targeting women in their twenties and thirties who want a more Sex And The City look."
